Occupational Health & Safety
Winner of the Hunter
Manufacturers Association
Safety Award
Our Mission
The safety of our personnel is the highest priority in our business management process
and our Safety Policy highlights our commitment to ensure all our employees return
home to their families at the end of each day uninjured. We have established employees'
confidence that we are committed to providing the safest possible workplace, through
consultation and by identifying and eliminating hazards and effectively controlling
all safety risks. We extend that commitment to all our clients, contractors and
visitors to our offices, workshops and construction sites.
SafetyMates
The SafetyMates (looking after each other) initiative was implemented
in early 2005
with DuPont Safety Leadership training for managers and supervisors and Hazard Identification
& Risk Assessment for all employees. This includes the Stop & Think risk
assessment process, where employees are asked to take the time to ask themselves
questions: "What am I about to do?", "What can go wrong" and "How can I do it safely?".
It also includes Unsafe Act Prevention (UAP) Observations, where supervisors and
managers observe work activities and discuss safety improvements with employees,
to correct unsafe behaviour before it escalates to become a safety incident.
Safety Achievements
- Achieved 3 Years Zero LTI in June 2009.
- Winner of the Inaugural Hunter Manufacturers Association Safety Award.
- Our Construction Services Division achieved 10 years LTI free in April 2006.
Safety Statistics
Our statistics comprise leading and lagging indicators. Leading indicators are an
account of the preventative measures we take to ensure the safety of our employees.
These are details of:
- Job Safety Analyses conducted
- Toolbox/Safety Committee meetings conducted
- Stop & Think risk assessments conducted
- Unsafe Acts Prevention (UAP) observations conducted
- Hazard reporting
- No Injury Incident (near misses) reports and investigations
- Corrective Actions implemented
Lagging indicators are an account of the past events and measure the effectiveness
of our incident prevention programs. It is a record of incidents resulting in injuries,
including Lost Time Injury (LTI), Medical Treatment Injury (MTI) and First Aid Injury.
Camp Quality
In 1998, RCR Stelform management decided to provide an incentive for working lost
time injury free. After consultation with the Safety committee, the decision was
made to donate $500 to Camp Quality for every month that is worked lost time injury
free. This incentive was chosen before individual safety bonuses, as it is a terrific
cause with an achievable target, and everyone participates simply by working safely.
A cheque has been presented to Camp Quality every December at our Christmas barbecue,
with over $58,000 donated up until Christmas 2008. In 2009 we will once again be
able to donate the maximum amount of $6,000.
Care for the Environment
Our commitment to protecting the environment is detailed in the RCR Stelform Environmental
Policy. It highlights our procedures for compliance with relevant legislation and
standards and specifies our risk assessment, control measures and auditing procedures
for all activities in conserving energy and resources and responsible waste management.
